How I Found My Way to Sound

I attended my first sound journey in the spring of 2023. It was an eye-opening, or maybe more of a mind-opening experience. As someone who practiced yoga and studied mindfulness as part of my doctoral work, I knew the benefits of meditation, but I didn’t know that it could be experienced like that. The soothing sounds gave my all too wandering mind something to focus on. The ocean drum at the end completely quieted the chatter – it was delightful and I was hooked.

I’ll admit that it was hard at first – as any new meditative experience might be – as I was focused on doing it “right” which to me meant that I would be able to immediately quiet my mind and drift off into a state of bliss. I had to remind myself that the very heart of a mindfulness practice – and a mindful life – is to notice – it’s the noticing of our mind wandering and bringing it back to the moment at hand that builds our capacity to be present. With each sound journey I attended it became easier for me to drop into the experience and attune to the melodic atmosphere that the practitioners were creating.

I didn’t know it back then, but sound would become an anchor that would keep me afloat when it felt like I was falling under. As I navigated a challenging time in my life, sound held me as I finally learned how to be present to the vast emotions, especially the more difficult ones, that were swirling within me – with curiosity and compassion and without judgment. As a recovering perfectionist this has been instrumental in my own healing. Sound made it safe for me to feel. I was finally able to stop fighting my experience and slow down enough to just be present to it. And it is from that place that I now hold space and facilitate sound journeys for other folks moving through this experience we call life.

The Recovering Perfectionist's Path

“Sound made it safe for me to feel. I was finally able to stop fighting my experience and slow down enough to just be present to it.”
